Choosing from Cat-Eye & Velvet Magnetic Gel Nails
Magnetic cat-eye and velvet gel polishes hold fine shimmer particles that you move with a magnet before curing, so one bottle can give you a sharp streak of light or a soft, all-over glow.

Cat-eye nails take their name from the single line of light that a magnet pulls across the polish, like the slit of a cat's eye. Hold the magnet further away, or sweep it over the whole nail, and the shimmer spreads into the diffused 'velvet' finish that has become one of the defining manicures of autumn and winter 2026.

This edit gathers around 170 magnetic gel products from GAOY, beetles Gel Polish, Born Pretty, RARJSM, Double Rhythm, modelones, GELLAKTIK and ROSALIND. Most are sets of six to twenty shades, many with a magnet in the box, alongside single 15ml bottles, magnetic top coats, multi-head magnet wands and a few cat-eye press-on sets for anyone who would rather skip the lamp. Prices mostly sit between about £22 and £42.

Magnetic gels are soak-off formulas cured under a UV/LED lamp. Apply them over a cured base coat, work one nail at a time and use the magnet within a few seconds of painting. Deep shades such as burgundy, olive and bronze give the richest velvet effect, while jelly nudes and pinks read softer for everyday wear.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cat-eye and velvet nails?

Both use magnetic gel. A cat-eye look concentrates the shimmer into a sharp line by holding the magnet close to one spot; velvet nails spread it across the whole nail by moving the magnet around or holding it further away, which gives a soft, diffused glow.

Do I need a special magnet?

Most sets in this collection include one, and you can also buy separate magnet wands with different heads for lines, stars and waves. Any strong nail magnet made for cat-eye gel will work.

Do magnetic gels need a UV/LED lamp?

Yes. Cat-eye gel polish is cured like any other gel. If you don't own a lamp, look at our gel nail kits that include one, or choose a cat-eye press-on set instead.

How do I remove cat-eye gel?

Remove it like any soak-off gel: gently file the shine off the top coat, soak with acetone-based remover wraps, then ease the softened gel away rather than peeling it.
