Choosing from Builder Gel & Rubber Base Nails
Builder gel and rubber base add a thin, flexible layer of strength over natural nails, or let you sculpt short extensions, and both cure under a UV/LED lamp.

Builder gel is a thicker, self-levelling gel used to strengthen natural nails, create a smooth apex and build short extensions. Rubber base is its softer cousin: a flexible base coat that adds a little structure and helps colour last. Both have become a favourite salon request for stronger-looking nails without acrylic, and both can be done at home with a lamp and some practice.

There are more than 350 products here from beetles Gel Polish, modelones, Makartt, GAOY, SUPWEE, SAVILAND, IN.HYPE, IBD and CANNI: clear, milky and nude-pink builder gels in bottles and pots, brush-on 'builder in a bottle' formulas, rubber base sets, polygel kits, solid sculpting gels, dual forms and slip solutions. Most items cost between about £22 and £38.

A note on sensitivity: gel products contain acrylates, and some people develop an allergy to them over time. Keep gel off the skin and cuticles, cure each layer for the full recommended time, and consider a HEMA-free formula, which many titles here state. If you notice itching, redness or swelling around the nails, stop using the product and ask a pharmacist or GP for advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between builder gel and rubber base?

Builder gel is thicker and harder once cured, so it can hold a shape or a short extension. Rubber base is thinner and more flexible, designed to sit under colour and add a little strength to natural nails.

Is builder gel the same as polygel?

Not quite. Polygel is a putty-like hybrid of acrylic and gel that you shape with a brush and slip solution, often using dual forms. Builder gel flows more like a thick polish. Both cure under a UV/LED lamp.

Can I apply builder gel at home?

Yes, with a UV/LED lamp, a base coat and some practice. Start with a clear or sheer nude builder on short nails before trying extensions.

What does HEMA-free mean?

HEMA is a common acrylate in gel products and one of the ingredients most often linked to gel allergies. HEMA-free formulas leave it out, but they still contain other acrylates, so careful application still matters.
