The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin, which holds moisture in and keeps irritants out. Central heating, cold wind, over-exfoliating and harsh cleansers can all leave it feeling tight, flaky or sensitive, which is why barrier care becomes a priority for many people in the UK from October onwards.
This collection gathers around 450 products formulated and labelled for barrier support. Creams and moisturisers make up the majority, from AESTURA ATOBARRIER365, BYOMA, Dr.Jart+ Ceramidin, Kiehl's, Pyunkang Yul, Dermalogica, Naturium, HARUHARU and The Ordinary, alongside barrier serums, milky toners, gentle cleansers, sheet masks, body lotions, hand creams and lip balms. Typical ingredients include ceramides, panthenol, squalane, fatty acids, centella, urea and hyaluronic acid. Most products cost between about £26 and £70. Sunscreens and medicated skin protectants are not included here.
Keep a barrier routine short: a mild cleanser, one hydrating serum or toner and a ceramide-rich moisturiser, with retinoids and acids paused or reduced until skin feels calmer. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, follow the advice of your GP or pharmacist.
Common signs include tightness after cleansing, flakiness, stinging from products that usually feel fine, and redness. These can have other causes, so if they persist, speak to a pharmacist or GP.
Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids mirror the lipids naturally found in skin, while panthenol, glycerin, squalane and urea help hold in moisture. Most products in this collection combine several of these.
Skin renews itself over roughly four weeks, so give a simplified routine at least a few weeks before judging it, and introduce new products one at a time.
It is sensible to pause or cut back on acids, scrubs and retinoids while skin feels sensitive, then bring them back slowly once it feels comfortable.
