What you need
- Gel base coat, gel colour and gel top coat
- A UV or LED nail lamp to cure each layer
- Nail prep: file, buffer, cuticle pusher and a lint-free wipe with cleanser
Step-by-step
- Prep: file and shape, gently push back cuticles, lightly buff the surface and wipe clean. Dry, oil-free nails are everything.
- Base coat: apply a thin layer, capping the free edge, and cure.
- Colour: two thin coats, curing each. Thin layers prevent shrinking and bubbling.
- Top coat: apply, cap the edge, and cure. Wipe any tacky residue with cleanser if your top coat isn't no-wipe.
- Finish: massage in cuticle oil.
How to remove gel safely
Never peel it off — that takes layers of your natural nail with it. Instead, gently buff the shiny top layer, soak a cotton pad in acetone, wrap each nail in foil for 10–15 minutes, then gently push the softened gel away. Finish with cuticle oil and a hydrating treatment.
Make it last
Cap the free edge on every layer, avoid flooding the cuticles, and wear gloves for washing up. A good base and top coat matter more than the colour.
Frequently asked questions
Is gel polish bad for your nails?
Applied and removed correctly, gel polish is safe. Damage usually comes from peeling it off or over-filing. Soak off gently and give nails a hydrating break between sets.
UV or LED lamp for gel polish?
LED lamps cure most modern gels faster and last longer; UV lamps are cheaper and cure a wider range of older gels. Check your polish is compatible with your lamp.
How long does at-home gel polish last?
With good prep and edge-capping, 2–3 weeks without chipping is normal.
