How would we describe Sensitive Skin and what would we recommend?

If you have “Sensitive Skin” then it can be of any skin type which can develop later in life. Quite often hormonal changes cause an increase in sensitivity and certain skin conditions e.g. eczema and Rosacea. Stress may be a factor too. The skin can become redder in colour and often has broken veins, can become Hot and Irritated.

The skin’s pH level is important and we often relate/classify skin types by the Ph Level it has i.e. where it is in the Alkaline to Acid range and maintaining a slightly acidic pH of around 5.5 is critical.

Typical questions we get asked about Sensitive Skin and some of our recommendations

Our clients always tell us that they have tremendous difficulty finding suitable products to help control the symptoms as the ones they use can sometimes make things worse.

Clients have difficulties using make up containing perfume and chemical ingredients. Even a small amount of irritating ingredient can trigger a sensitive response.

We would suggest for a sensitive skin that LESS IS BEST. You should favour simple products with minimal ingredients and use a physical sun protection method, not a chemical one e.g. Zinc Oxide.

The type of products we would suggest are Calming cleansers which can be removed without water, Barrier creams for daily use to protect against the potential aggravating environmental intrusions on the skin and DO NOT use any harsh exfoliating scrubs. As previously mentioned there is a need to protect the Acid Mantle on the skin and a great Make Up product would be the Bare Mineral range containing natural minerals.

Treatments Recommended for Sensitive Skins

a) The Alpha Beta Peel

The use of anti-inflammatory Salycylic Acid on the skin can help reduce the redness and sensitivity. Additional use of Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is a strong tool to work with the Peel and give quite dramatic results. This is just one of several Peels we offer.

b) The products you use ?

Advice regarding home use products is paramount and we encourage you to bring in your products to show us and discuss ingredients.

c) We also provide effective treatments for Rosacea and Red Veins at the clinic.

One of the major culprits for radically changing the Ph level of the skin is the soap you use!!! So, when clients come to our clinic an initial key question for us to ask is “What do you use to cleanse your skin?”

Some of the soaps presented to us have an equivalent alkaline level of AJAX, so would you put this on your skin?

So it is vitally important to check what you are using on your skin and if you read our very interesting article on a achieving a "Well Balanced Skin" you will learn a lot we are sure.

So, with the right balance of products and using of course them, will help to effectively maintain your skin in a healthy condition and keep it younger looking. We always advise Sun Protection for all year round and we always recommend a SPF30.

We can advise you on this and ideally if you have a Consultation Facial with us you will find out all you need to know and have your questions answered to improve and maintain a healthy younger looking skin.

We also offer a Free Skin Analysis in our Skin Scanner which takes about 15 minutes where we can explain identify any skin issues and provide some initial guidance. There is no obligation afterwards as we have a genuine passion for skin care and want potential clients to understand their skin better.
